Our Mission
The Metellus Foundation Inc. exists to expand opportunity and empower individuals, families, and communities, with a focus on those who are economically disadvantaged and underserved. Our Story
Every legacy begins with a story. Ours began with a young man who had every reason to give up, yet refused to believe that his circumstances would determine his future.
Metellus Foundation, Inc. was born from the lived experiences, personal sacrifices, and unwavering determination of its Founder, President & CEO, Kalief Metellus. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, as the oldest of seven children, Kalief grew up facing poverty, housing instability, and homelessness, moving through multiple New York City shelter systems during his youth. Without a father present, an older brother to turn to, or a consistent role model to guide him, he was often left to navigate life's challenges alone. While searching for direction himself, he carried the responsibility of becoming an example for his six younger siblings. There were nights when a safe place to sleep was uncertain, moments when survival came before dreams, and times when the future seemed beyond his reach. Before the degrees, leadership titles, and accomplishments, there was simply a young man trying to find his way in a world that had not always made room for him.
As a first-generation college student, Kalief viewed education as more than an opportunity to earn a degree. It was a chance to break cycles, create stability, and build a future that once seemed impossible. Through perseverance, mentorship, and the encouragement of those who believed in him, he began transforming hardship into purpose. Despite significant family responsibilities, personal sacrifices, and the devastating loss of loved ones, he earned his bachelor's degree from SUNY Old Westbury, completed his master's degree at Grand Canyon University, and continued his educational journey as a doctoral student at Drexel University. Each milestone represents more than academic achievement. It represents every obstacle overcome, every sacrifice made, and every moment he chose to keep going when giving up would have been easier.
But as Kalief's opportunities grew, so did his understanding of what true success meant. He never forgot the young person who needed guidance, the family struggling to make ends meet, or the student whose circumstances threatened to overshadow their potential. One question ultimately became the driving force behind his vision: What is the purpose of overcoming barriers if you do nothing to remove them for someone else?
In September 2026, that vision became Metellus Foundation, Inc. Guided by the principles of Access, Opportunity, Leadership, and Impact, the Foundation was established to expand opportunities for economically disadvantaged and underserved individuals, families, and communities. Through scholarships, education, mentorship, workforce development, leadership development, advocacy, and access to essential resources, the organization is committed to addressing barriers and creating meaningful pathways toward success.
For Kalief, this mission is not simply about giving back. It is about becoming the person he once needed. He sees himself in the young person searching for direction, the student struggling to remain in school, and the family trying to survive another difficult day. He understands firsthand that talent exists everywhere, but access to opportunity does not. The Foundation represents his commitment to ensuring that individuals are not defined by where they come from, what they have endured, or the resources they may lack.
What began as one young man's determination to survive has become a mission to help others thrive. Metellus Foundation, Inc. is more than a nonprofit organization bearing his name. It is a promise to transform personal adversity into collective opportunity, to build pathways where barriers once existed, and to create a legacy that extends far beyond one lifetime.
Because Kalief knows what it means to grow up searching for someone to lead the way. Today, he is building something to ensure that others never have to walk that journey alone.
